Gold Coast’s botched curly hair cuts
My curly salon has been open just 3 months…and practically every second client of mine has been BOTCHED by previous hairdressers. A lot of women come to me with previous trauma, some rooted from years ago and some with recently botched haircuts.
We would expect this from traditional hairdressers. After all, us hairdressers are only taught in hair school how to REMOVE/”FIX”/GET RID OF curls. So, of course hairdressers will botch curly hair if they have no actual proper training in curls.
But this is the part that really worries me…
It’s trained curl specialists that are also doing the botching!!
Now at times I can be a bit of a conspiracy theorist, so hear me out, I have found a pattern to these *not great* curly hair specialists. They are doing curly hair courses and applying what they have learned to everyone without actually considering:
a) the hair, curl pattern and needs of the person in their chair
b) the preferences and desired outcome of their clients
I have also discovered that in the world of hustle culture, selling a course is an easy (and most times unethical) way to make quick $$$. I’m starting to see a trend of curl “specialists” selling their courses to other hairdressers. The issue is, a lot of the “specialists” really aren’t that good and now they’re just spreading their mediocre techniques. In fact, the girl in the picture above told me that her ex hairdresser was a curl specialist educator. On the topic of the beautiful girl in the picture, let’s take a closer look at what terrible curly hair cuts looks like
Non consensual mullet
If you love mullets, then I love that for you and I wish the most mulleting-mullets in the world for you.
But 99% of us are scared of mullets
And we don’t want mullets
But thanks to bad curly cuts, a massive chunk of curly girls are wanting around with mullets they didn’t ask for!
Fat fringes
Same as my mullet disclaimer. If you love bulky fringes, then more power to you. But most of us don’t. Bulky fringes generally make faces look round and bloated. For some sad reason, so many curly hairdressers ignore this fact and instead love to carve out a chunky, unflattering fringe.
Bowl cuts
There’s a big difference between a rounded cut and a bowl cut. Rounded is flattering, uplifting and enhancing. Bowl cuts just look like a stretched out oval. Yet another shape I see often. Once again, applying blanket practises without actually regarding what the client wants or what flatters their appearance.
Uneven layers
Don’t even get me started on the layers. Just why?! Everyone has different densities, why are some of them cutting low density hair the same way they cut high density hair? Also, I can’t go for a 10 minute walk without seeing a curly girl with mismatched layers. It doesn’t look good. It looks like their 3 yr old cousin was playing hairdresser with them. Expect it wasn’t their 3 yr old cousin, it was a trained curl specialist who the poor girl paid money to get botched by.
Bad curly education vs good curly education
I’ve done several curly hair cutting courses, and I definitely learned that they are not equal. Each course and instructor has their own way of doing things. I once went to a course with a colleague and afterwards spent hours explaining to her why everything the course taught was rubbish! (and this was a very reputable course, by the way). I even apologised to my model and told her that’s not the method I usually use to cut curls!
I feel bad for all the girls who have been botched. All I can say is, me too. I only ever started to enjoy my curly cut and shape after guiding my apprentice with cutting my own hair. I want to do anything I can to make things better for you. Maybe for now that looks like referring you to a great curly product routine and maybe later on down the track I’ll have the honour of reshaping your curls.
